Watch the Trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic Horror-Romance Crimson Peak

The first trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak has arrived courtesy of Universal and Legendary Pictures and it’s everything we hoped and more. From the very start, we have to say we’re really digging the whole gothic vibe from the movie. The trailer makes heavy use of its brooding, atmospheric settings and ghostly effects. The Victorian architecture and clothing should provide enough steamy romantic intrigue to reach its adult target audience—there’s just something so romantic about being stuck in a haunted house, right?

It’s also exciting to see an R-rated film from del Toro. Pan’s Labyrinth has been hailed as a fantasy story for adults, and the more chaotic themes of this gothic tale seem to indicate a similar structure. Did you get a look at the ghost crawling out of the floor of the desolate hallway? That’s on par with any Babadook that might be hiding in your child’s closet.

As a bonus, Legendary Pictures has also released an official synopsis for the film, along with one of the coolest posters of the year thus far. Here’s the official story behind the trailer:

“Legendary Pictures’ Crimson Peak, a co-production with Universal Pictures, is a haunting gothic horror story directed by the master of dark fairy tales, Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy series, Pacific Rim), written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins and starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam. In the aftermath of a family tragedy, an aspiring author is torn between love for her childhood friend and the temptation of a mysterious outsider. Trying to escape the ghosts of her past, she is swept away to a house that breathes, bleeds…and remembers. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Callum Greene produce and Jillian Share executive produces.”

As if the setting wasn’t enough to get us hooked, the stellar cast would. This is one project we’ll be looking forward to when it hits theaters on Oct. 16.
