The Wicked 90s Style First-Person Shooter Strafe Is Fully Funded on Kickstarter

The fastest, bloodiest, deadliest, most adjective-abusing, action-packed first-person shooter of 1996 has now reached its $250,000 goal on Kickstarter. In case you missed it, Strafe is the latest success story on the crowdfunding website to go viral. A month ago the game started its campaign to support the bloody nostalgia of gamers who grew up on the likes of Doom and Quake. The trailer was explosive and wickedly cool. To summarize, a child’s face melts off like something from Raiders of the Lost Ark before his head blows up due to the intensity of the gameplay.

Now the game from developer Pixel Titans is entering its final stretch, and to reward all its backers, the team behind the game has dropped yet another insane trailer. Much like the trailer before it, this newest look at the game has nothing to do with the game itself. With that said, we really have no idea what Strafe is about. So here’s the official description from the Kickstarter page to clear things up:

“It’s your yearly scrapping mission, but this year is different. Your humble scout ship has been recruited to join the massive spacecraft ICARUS. They plan to head to the far edge of the galaxy, to a remote sector where other scrappers have not yet dared to venture.

The rewards could be unimaginable. But so are the risks. It may be unexplored space, but it’s a gamble you know you must take.

You lost.

You return from a run empty handed, but worse, ICARUS is nowhere to be found. You check your coordinates. You try the coms. No answer from your comrades on ICARUS. Yet their teleporter appears in-range and responsive.

So you grab a gun “just in case” and teleport onto ICARUS. What could go wrong?

Everything goes wrong. This is Strafe. Prepare for hours of uninterrupted chaos that won’t stop for storylines or anything short of a melted CPU”

That’s a hardcore description if we’ve ever seen one. From the sound of everything we know to date, the game is really pulling out all the stops to look and feel similar to Doom. We’re most intrigued by the auto-generated levels after every load screen. The game promises “billions of level possibilities,” with each level changing after each load so the same game is never played twice. The game will also have “life-like digital gravity,” “fast and responsive controls” and Oculus Rift compatibility—once again, this is all according to the designers.

With the Kickstarter campaign officially over, more stretch goals are now being offered on the game’s website. These new targets will include another $250,000 for a cooperative mode and an additional $325,000 goal for mod support.
