Two of Hollywood’s brightest stars are in for a hard time. The news online is that Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone may sign up to star in Damien Chazelle’s next feature. The young writer/director broke onto the scene last year with the drum-beating, hand-bleeding drama Whiplash. According to reports, the new project will be a musical titled La La Land and if Gosling and Stone can’t keep up with Chazelle’s tempo, no one can protect them from the ensuing wrath that will follow. Now would be the perfect time for them to figure out if they’re rushing or dragging.

The news comes from Deadline, which is reporting that both leads are currently circling the project but have not yet made a commitment. Previously, Whiplash star Miles Teller was considering the role but moved on from the project. Our best guess is he couldn’t stand the physical torture that Chazelle was inevitably planning to unleash on him during the production. Emma Watson was also attached to star at one point before her role in the Beauty and the Beast remake resulted in a scheduling conflict. Now it appears Gosling and Stone are next in line.

If both deals can be locked down, this will mark the third collaboration for Gosling and Stone who previously starred in Crazy Stupid Love and Gangster Squad together. And although the second film was not necessarily the best romantic relationship written for the big screen, the first outing for the duo showed some serious chemistry between the stars. That will be one positive that Chazelle will attempt to channel for La La Land as the plot will revolve around a jazz pianist and an aspiring actress falling in love in modern day Los Angeles.

As for when shooting will get underway, the exact release date is unknown. The script for the project was written before Whiplash, which means it could lack some of the fire of that film but we’re confident the young director has something great in store for viewers. This is one picture we’ll keep an eye on as it approaches a start date.
