SNL alums Fred Armisen and Bill Hader will be reuniting for Documentary Now!, a new comedy for IFC. The series will premiere on Thursday, Aug. 20 at 10 p.m.
Documentary Now! stars Armisen and Hader as they take on various subjects in a mockumentary format. There will be six half-hour episodes for the first season, each focusing on a different topic, with appearances by guest stars such as Jack Black (Tenacious D), John Slattery (Mad Men) as well as other SNL castmates.
The show is created by Armisen, Hader and fellow SNL alum Seth Meyers. Rhys Thomas and Alex Buono will direct, while Lorne Michaels will executive produce.
Armisen, Hader and Meyers recently revealed to Entertainment Weekly, some of the storylines they will cover in the series, such as “Sandy Passage,” a look at mother-daughter socialites, “Blue Jean Committee,” centering on an Eagles-like California rock band in the ‘70s and “Dronez,” where New York journalists head to Mexico to investigate drug cartels, Vice-style.
“We’re all fans of documentary films and this allows us to use that love of documentary film and combine it with comedy to present a sort of unique take on the form,” Armisen, Hader and Meyers released in a joint statement.
“Having the powerhouse trio of Fred, Bill and Seth putting their spin on documentaries is historic in and of itself,” added IFC president Jennifer Caserta. “No one else could create such ridiculous authenticity, truth and comedy.”
It seems that IFC can’t get enough of Armisen, having already renewed his other comedy Portlandia for two more seasons. If this new series is anything like that, IFC may have another hit on their hands.
