Meryl Streep can now add rock star to her résumé with her leading role in Jonathan Demme’s latest work, Ricki and the Flash.
Streep is cast as titular character Ricki Rendazzo, who returns home to reconnect with her family after receiving news that daughter Julie’s marriage has collapsed after her husband left her for another woman. When she returns home, Rendazzo stays with her ex-husband and his second wife in an effort to support her daughter and re-establish her relationship with her son, who hid his engagement to prevent his mother from attending his wedding.
The film was penned by Academy Award-winning writer Diablo Cody and also stars Rick Springfield, Kevin Kline and Audra McDonald, as well as Streep’s real-life daughter Mamie Gummer, who plays daughter Julie.
Ricki and the Flash hits theaters Aug. 7.
