Never judge a book by its cover. Okay. That’s pretty easy. Never judge a dessert by its cover…now that’s a little less convincing. When it comes to the eleven sweets in this gallery, what you see is not what you get. No joke, these entrées are actually desserts.
Raise your hand if looking at these photos has your taste buds totally confused. Both my hands are up—so much of food enjoyment is visual, and I can’t wrap my head around how these salty-looking delights are actually sugary.
Yet I find myself oddly intrigued by them. I want to know more. As a kid, I had a few experiences with disguised desserts. My brother always requested the “pizza” birthday cake. In Italy a few years back, I tried pasta that was actually ice cream. There I also enjoyed marzipan shaped like wiener schnitzel. While my rational brain understood it was a dessert, the visual side of my brain kept telling my gustatory part to expect something sweet. Every bite was a surprise, but in a good way.
And hey, even if these might not taste good, they just look pretty dang cool.
