Johnnie Cluney has come a long way in technological terms.
When Daytrotter started back in 2006, he didn’t even have a computer. Pictures of the bands would be taken at the recording sessions, or someone would print out photographs for him to use. “I did the drawings and put them in a manila envelope in my mailbox when I was finished with them,” he says. ”Our web guy would come and pick them up at 6 or 7 in the morning and put them on the website.”
Now, Johnnie manages the entire publishing process, even using Facebook as a tool to find band pics. June 2 marked his 5,000th illustration with a portrait of Built to Spill.
When tasked to select some of his favorite works from the last nine years, many of the early mailbox deliveries made his list, along with more recent portraits. To ask the artist to leaf through nearly a decade of material and pick favorites is, well, kind of cruel. “I could stay on [the website] forever,” he admits.
Here’s 10 of his favorite Daytrotter illustrations. Bonus: Cluney’s own self-portrait. Read A Portrait of Daytrotter Artist Johnnie Cluney: Age 5,000 next.
