Breakfast of Champions is one of Kurt Vonnegut’s most-loved works, but the wry look at American life requires a certain touch when being adapted for audio. And for Audible’s latest adaptation of the book, thank God they got John Malkovich (Burn After Reading, In the Line of Fire and, duh, Being John Malkovich). The audiobook service released a Malkovich-narrated adaptation of Breakfast of Champions, Vonnegut’s eighth novel that follows the American experience through Kilgore Trout, a struggling sci-fi writer.
“Breakfast of Champions is just about the best script an actor could wish for, and it was a real treat to perform this landmark work for Audible Studios,” Malkovich said in a press release. “I hope Vonnegut fans have as much fun listening to this challenging and funny American classic as I had recording it, and I believe those new to the book will discover it’s just as fresh and relevant as it was 40 years ago.”
Today, we’ve got an exclusive Breakfast of Champions clip from Audible. Take a listen below for a taste of Malkovich’s adaptation, and get the whole thing here.
