The Roles of a Lifetime: Al Pacino

Al Pacino survived a series of dead-end jobs and occasional homelessness before he finally made a living at acting. But to moviegoers, he seemed to emerge from obscurity fully formed, the damaged hero or sympathetic antihero in a remarkable string of roles (in films like The Panic in Needle Park, The Godfather, Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon) that might have been written just for him. Scarface, which made Pacino a cult icon, marked the end of that golden age, but the actor has continued to show an uncanny ability to inhabit the skin (and, in the case of Phil Spector, the hair) of complex, deeply flawed characters.
