It’s not everyday that a 22 year old from Hawaii scores the 87th minute winner against the World Cup champions in Germany.
That’s exactly what Bobby Wood did yesterday in an historic win in a friendly match for the US mens national team Mix Diskerud’s 41st minute strike cancelled out Mario Goetze’s opener for the home side.
Now, some caveats we’ll need to get out of the way. This was by no means a full-strength German side, with a very unfamiliar back four and no Manuel Neuer. Moreover the friendly came after a long domestic season for several German players, some of whom were rested ahead of a key European championship qualifier against Gibraltar.
Nevertheless Wood, who plays for FC Erzgebirge Aue, a side recently relegated from the Bundesliga 2, helped cap off what has been a successful international break for Jurgen Klinsmann’s US squad, with wins against the Netherlands and now Germany.
