Watch Seashells: A New Short Film Recalling the “Nightmare of Your First Bra”

No one remembers puberty without a hovering cloud of total awkwardness. And in Natalie Neal’s latest short film, Seashells, she doesn’t spare us anything but. The film shows a young girl’s first bra dilemma through a fresh, sticker-speckled lens. Cue the flashbacks to Lizzie McGuire’s infamous first bra trip.;

Similar to her debut short, Rose and Sophia,; Neal incorporates the sanctity of best friends with relatable quirks. In Rose and Sophia, the namesakes apply tattoos to each other. In Seashells, Valentina and her best friend spend their days finding shapes in the clouds and drinking that heavenly blue juice Kool-Aid put in plastic, unmarked bottles.

Neal is a master of tugging at the heartstrings—nailing what screams childhood and creating beautiful, aesthetically pleasing shots. As Valentina listens to her doting mother explain the changes she is about to experience, Valentina’s tears remind us of the endless painfully awkward conversations we endured pre-adolescence. In just under 10 minutes, Neal takes us back to the lazy days of singing along to our cassette inserts, eating fruit roll-ups, and looking for life answers in our lava lamps.

Bonus: Fans of surf-rockers Cherry Glazerr are in for a treat: Clementine Creevy and Sean Redman modeled the “Seashells” T-shirts.;
