Realistically, there was no reason for the Gorillaz to ever become the global sensation they did. But that’s exactly happened, as the virtual electronic group created by Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett sold millions of records worldwide off the strength of iconic singles like “Feel Good Inc.” and “Clint Eastwood” before quietly going into hiatus. Now, Consequence of Sound reports that Albarn will begin recording the band’s new album in September with a tentative 2016 release date.

Albarn confirmed the project in a recent interview with Australia’s ABC News. Hewlett, meanwhile, has taken to Instagram over the last few months to post new artwork of the band’s characters. Excluding The Fall, the band’s last pet project recorded entirely on Albarn’s iPad, this will be the Gorillaz’ first official album since 2010’s Plastic Beach.
