With a name like Thunderbitch, you shouldn’t really know what to expect. It sounds pretty threatening and to be honest, kind of scary. It’s a name that belies a surprisingly approachable band, whose debut album you can stream here or purchase on iTunes.
Thunderbitch is a project consisting of Brittany Howard of Alabama Shakes and members of Nashville’s Fly Golden Eagle and Clear Plastic Masks, formerly of Brooklyn. According to Nashville blog Nashville Cream, they’ve been pretty quiet over the past few years but this weekend, that changed when their self-titled album was released. It’s a modern mix between rockabilly, surf rock, and classic rock-n-roll that moves pretty consistently through the entire album, with a classic vibe. Titles like “Leather Jacket” remind you of the Ramones’ favorite outerwear, and “I Don’t Care”, “Wild Child” and “I Just Want to Rock and Roll” are about as elementary as it gets when it comes to rock song titles. There are various elements to several of these tracks that bring to mind Buddy Holly, the Beach Boys and the Rolling Stones. Thunderbitch is classic in the best way possible, taking us back to good old rock-n-roll without synthesizers and auto-tune.
