Kelsey Montague is a pen and ink artist whose interest lies in how public art, interactive art and social media intersect. In 2014, Montague created two massive angel wings in New York’s Nolita neighborhood intricately designed with quirky illustrations and elaborate patterns representing the vibrancy of New York City. Combined with the hashtag #whatliftsyou, the street art mural not only ornamented a bustling NYC block, it also invited people to interact with the piece and encouraged engagement on social media.
Her hashtag worked; Taylor Swift, Vanessa Hudgens and hundreds of other non-celebrities shared her image on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook with their personal story.
The du jour trend of adult coloring books to relieve stress aligns swimmingly with Montague’s interest in increasing interaction between art and viewer. Montague is designing her own adult coloring book filled with whimsical and ornate illustrations not dissimilar to her #whatliftsyou wings.
“This book is the 2.0 version of the coloring book for adults,” Montague told Entertainment Weekly, who exclusively released the cover and a sample page of Montague’s book. “Each page within the book invites you to color in inspirational images, but to also take it one step further. Pull out a page and use it as a frame for a photo, or create a masquerade mask, or an origami flower, or color a bouquet of flowers for a friend. This book is all about sharing YOUR creativity!”
Capitalizing on the popularity of her recent street art installation, the book is entitled “What Lifts You?” and will be available for purchase on February 23, 2016. View the book’s cover below.
