Naming a baby is hard work in this day and age. You don’t want it to be something super popular, because then your precious child will have to go through school with 10 other kids with the same name. But at the same time you don’t want it to be something too obscure. Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow were ridiculed pretty harshly when they decided to name their baby girl Apple.
These days, naming your kid is like a refined art. It needs to be the perfect balance between inspiration and nostalgia. Should you name him/her after someone you love, like your grandparents? What have your friends named their kids? How unique is too unique before it gets weird? Is it okay to name your kid after your favorite type of flora or fauna? Naming a child is hard work.
Luckily, designer and illustrator Alex Davey has decided to make it easy on you. She created the Hipster Baby Name Generator, where you can select what your baby likes or does and it whips up a very trendy name.
For me, I said that my (non-existent) baby likes the farmers’ market’s edible flowers and saws logs in her sleep, because that sounds like something she would do when she isn’t reading Tolstoy or baking gluten-free single-origin chocolate chip cookies. Elsie Magnolia Alder Black is the name the generator chose for my fake baby. The irony is heavy here, because my hip older sister and her husband just named their newborn girl Magnolia.
This baby name generator may really be on to something.
