TV Azteca released a new commercial advertizing their coverage of Mexico’s playoff game against the United States on October 10th for a place in the 2017 Confederations Cup. And regardless of your team loyalties, this may be the best thing you see all day.
The commercial prominently features footage from Donald Trump’s infamous presidential candidacy speech, in which he lamented America’s diminished standing in the world while also accusing Latino immigrants of being rapists and criminals. Mixed in with the speech are clips from Mexico victories over the US (including the 2011 Gold Cup Final), El Tri players like Giovani dos Santos excelling in MLS, and USMNT players and fans looking absolutely dejected.
It is, in a word, brilliant. This is the kind of thing that makes the ongoing sporting beef between the USA and Mexico, for my money at least, one of the best rivalries in international football. And even if you’re a loyal USA fan, this is so well-executed and hilarious that it’s hard to be mad about it.
Well played, TV Azteca. Well played.
See you next month.
