Usually, the cheesy gimmick is a dog on a skateboard, but, apparently, pups are serious about surfing. The seventh annual “Surf City Surf Dog” competition recently concluded in Huntington Beach, California, in which canines hit the waves, showing off their surfing skills.
Because the dogs can’t exactly paddle out and ride the lip, the owners push the pooches into breaking waves where the dogs then stand, sit, and walk on the surfboard, much to the delight of the crowd.
Similar to an ordinary surf competition, the dogs competed in four categories and were judged on pertinent skills like the length of their ride and board swagger—the more confidence on the board the better the score.
This competition definitely puts the “dog” in Lords of Dogtown.
