This week in our Time Travel series, we’re grooving through the history of music festivals.
While music festivals haven’t always been as pervasive as they are now, music has been a beloved celebratory medium for centuries. Whether they graced the Pythian Games or fueled a religious revival, historic fests brought a sense of community and folly.
Counterculture and the success of Woodstock bred more festivals towards the end of the 20th century. The influx in festivals covered multiple genres, from pop to jazz and even pre-Baroque music. As alternative music grew more popular, grander events followed, and today lineups for new festivals are almost inescapable.
