Despite the heaps of critical praise for the second season of HBO’s The Leftovers, the network hasn’t yet decided whether to renew the show for a third season. The bleak, moody drama—created by Lost’s Damon Lindelof—followed up a fascinating (if uneven) first season with a spectacular second, but the “fanatical fan base” has not translated into ratings. In fact, this season’s numbers have declined significantly, which undoubtedly explains HBO’s hesitation.
“We executed exactly the plan that we wanted to execute,” Lindelof said after Sunday’s season finale. “There is a feeling of completeness and circularity, but also as storytellers and writers, we want there to be more Leftovers.”
The uncertainty about a third season prompted some of the show’s fans to dress up as members of The Guilty Remnant cult whose members wear white jumpsuits, take a vow of silence, and chain smoke as they strive to remind the living of the near-apocalyptic tragedy at the heart of the show—to picket HBO’s headquarters in New York City on Monday. In true GR fashion, they smoked, stayed quiet, and held up signs with the single word “Renew.”
