Hallo Deutschland.

In 1981, the DIY/punk scene burst into Berlin with Geniale Dilletanten, the intentionally misspelled music festival at the Tempodrom. That phrase, “Genial Dilletantes” (which translates to “Brilliant Dilletantes” in English) became synonymous with the underground revolution that took place in Germany in the early ‘80s.

This month a photobook and exhibition will honor that movement in the country. Brilliant Dilletantes — Subculture in Germany in the 1980s will be held at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe (“Arts and Crafts”) in Hamburg documenting the artists and locations paramount to the ‘80s counterculture of East and West Germany. The exhibit will employ feature video, photos, music, magazines, posters, fashion and an interview film made specifically for the occasion in recognition of seven bands and other artists of the revolutionary time.

The exhibition is running Jan. 23 – April 30, at Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg.
