Portland-based singer/songwriter Tommy Alexander has written a lot of music in a very little amount of time. In the past five years, he’s released two full-length LPs and two EPs in addition to founding an artist collective and record label.
Alexander’s newest record, Old News, is scheduled for release on March 23. He worked with producer Mike Coykendall (of other notable Northwest acts like M. Ward, She and Him, and Blitzen Trapper), to hone his folksy sway into an indie-darling tone.
Lead single “Everyday, Every Dime” almost didn’t make the cut, though. As Alexander recalls, “I wrote the tune very light heartedly and it didn’t stick with me right away. A good friend heard it and loved the song, and the message. It helped her cope with something important. She breathed life deep into the tune. Now I get asked to play it all the time.”
The moral, concludes Alexander, “is that sometimes you just don’t know what you’ve got until someone else needs it, and that’s okay.”
