“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains.” — Seth Grahame-Smith, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Seth Grahame-Smith catalyzed the classic literature/monster mash-up trend in 2009 with his debut novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. Drawing from Jane Austen’s original text and expanding upon the story, he cursed Regency England with a zombie plague to create a stunning international bestseller. Austen heroine Elizabeth Bennet fights the undead—in a corset, no less—and still finds time for verbal sparring with the iconic Mr. Darcy.
PPZ has gone on to sell over two million copies to date, and a film adaptation of the novel hits theaters this Friday. Staring Lily James (Downton Abbey, Cinderella) as Elizabeth Bennet and Sam Riley (Maleficent) as Mr. Darcy, the movie promises to deliver Austen’s timeless love story against a a backdrop of violence and gore.
