Actors lucky enough to catch the eye of Joel and Ethan Coen often land in the brothers’ stable of favorites. That was the case with Holly Hunter, who was just a voice on an answering machine in the Coens’ first movie, Blood Simple. (Hunter was roommates with Frances McDormand, the film’s star and, later, Joel’s wife and another favorite.) That led to Hunter’s breakout role in the Coens’ cult hit Raising Arizona, and yet another role 13 years later in their wonderfully goofy O Brother, Where Art Thou? In the interim, Hunter proved she could carry a film with critically acclaimed performances in Broadcast News and The Piano, the latter of which won her the Best Actress Oscar. Next up for Hunter: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
