Chipotle Introduces Chorizo to Its Menu, Starting in Six Cities

Food News Chipotle

This is a big week for Chipotle. In addition to kicking off its rewards program this Friday, the fast-casual chain is also introducing chorizo, a spicy chicken and pork sausage, to its menu, beginning in six cities.

The new addition will be tested in Columbus, Sacramento, San Diego, Denver, Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C., and New York City’s Manhattan locations. According to a press release, the chorizo is made from pork and white-meat chicken, and seasoned with paprika, toasted cumin and chipotle peppers. Chipotle hopes to introduce chorizo to all its menus in the U.S. this fall. In June 2015, Chipotle tested the menu item in a few select locations, including one in Kansas City.

This is only Chipotle’s second menu addition since it opened 23 years ago. The first menu addition was sofritas in 2014. These new changes are meant to boost Chipotle sales after news of an E. coli outbreak linked to Chipotle stores last year led sales to plummet.
