HBO has released the first teaser trailer for Insecure, a new comedy series from YouTube star Issa Rae. The show, much like Rae’s web series The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl, will follow the friendship of two black women through an array of life experiences, from the triumphant to the uncomfortable.
The 50-second teaser gives us a real taste of the comedy, which appears to be as fresh as they come. It opens on (and returns to) Issa in a classroom full of black girls of which she seems to be in charge. The girls throw questions at her in typical unfiltered kid fashion: “Why do you talk like a white lady?” “Why ain’t you married?”
We get glimpses of Issa’s personal life with the questions, moments with her best friend Molly (Yvonne Orji) and a half-hearted romantic interest. The brightest comedic moment comes when Issa talks to the class about black women, saying “We’re just tired of being expected to settle for less,” prompting the quick burn, “Her outfit settled for less!” from one student.
Insecure, which was announced last fall and has been in the works at HBO since 2013, also stars Lisa Joyce and Jay Ellis, and is executive-produced by Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Beck and Jonathan Berry, with The Nightly Show host Larry Wilmore as a consultant. The half-hour series’ eight-episode first season will premiere on HBO this fall. Watch the first teaser above.
