Folk musician and social activist Judy Collins recently visited the Paste Studio to perform a selection of songs from her expansive discography. Releasing her first album in 1961, Collins achieved international acclaim with her cover of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides, Now” in 1967. Her career never waivered over the decades, presumably because her passion never did either.
A lyricist at heart, Collins has always been equal parts poet and musician. Now 77, Collins has collaborated with Bronx-singer/songwriter Ari Hest to complete the next development of her career, Silver Skies Blue. Her songwriting was always a double-edged sword, both something to feel as well as something to awe at. But more so than eliciting feeling, Collins was always able to provoke action. True to her folk roots, Collins work has a history of social activism in her work, recording an album of whale song samples to save the whales and writing ballads in support of social icons like Che Guevara .
Collins has recently separated her activism and her career, acting as a representative for UNICEF while eschewing politics entirely on Silver Skies Blue, but her music has only grown more mature, and with that more mellow. Take the chance to see the legend in action on her summer tour supporting Silver Skies Blue on one of her summer dates below.
