So far, Team USA has dominated in the Olympic Aquatics Stadium.
It started with 19-year-old Katie Ledecky shattering a previously held world record with a time of three minutes, 46:56 seconds. It was the first gold medal for Team USA, but not the last.
Returning champion Michael Phelps made a huge splash on Saturday after his leap into the water during the Men’s 4 X 100 Meter Relay ended in 47.12 seconds, which clinched the gold for Team USA.
Beyond the stars and stripes, fellow red, white and blue wavers Australia have claimed two medals, one with Mack Horton taking the gold in the Men’s 400 Meter Freestyle and the other claimed by the Australian Women’s Team during the Women’s 4 X 100 Meter Freestyle Relay.
Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom won her personal first ever gold medal and her country’s first in the pool during the women’s 100 Meter Butterfly.
Currently, Team USA holds eight total medals in Olympic swimming, followed by Australia with three. Tonight, NBC will air the final competitions for the Men’s 200 Meter Freestyle, the Women’s 100 Meter Breaststroke, and the men’s and Women’s 100 Meter Backstroke starting at 8 p.m.
