The breathtaking trailer for Barry Jenkins’ drama Moonlight was unveiled today.

Filmed and set in Miami, the film is based on the play In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney. The movie is divided into three vignettes set in the late ‘90s, the 2000s and present day, and follows a young man named Chiron coming of age during a tumultuous time in the city. The vivid trailer is a stunning look at the gripping tale of Chiron’s turbulent home life and his developing sexuality.

Moonlight stars Trevante Rhodes (If Loving You Is Wrong), Ashton Sanders (Straight Outta Compton), Mahershala Ali (House of Cards), Naomie Harris (Spectre), Andre Holland (The Knick), singer Janelle Monáe (making her live-action film debut) and more. Judging by the trailer, their performances—especially Rhodes’—look like dynamite.

The feature film, Jenkins’ second, will hit the festival circuit, first with the Toronto International Film Festival and then the New York Film Festival, before being released in theaters starting Oct. 21. The film is being released by A24, the powerhouse studio behind such hits as The Lobster, Green Room and The Witch (all three of which made our list of the year’s best films so far), in conjunction with Plan B Productions, with Brad Pitt attached as an executive producer.
