Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them has an asset that the Harry Potter franchise never did: its plot is a mystery, and that means that the film’s trailers can choose what to show us and what to keep secret. The film’s newest trailer gives us a better sense of what the film may look like, but it doesn’t play every card.
In the trailer, we see exactly the damage that Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) does after arriving in America with a case filled with magical creatures that are eventually let loose. We also get a sense of who’s on which side, with Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and “no-maj” Dan Fogler (Kung Fu Panda) are on Newt’s team while Colin Farrell (The Lobster) and Carmen Ejogo (Selma) work against them.
As for Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower), it’s hard to say exactly what role he’ll play in the final film, but it’s clear that he and Farrell are up to no good. There’s also a passing mention of “Grindelwald’s attacks in Europe,” which should be enough to get any true Potter fan’s heart racing.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them hits theaters on Nov. 16. It’s the first in a planned trilogy, so be prepared to spend the next few years unraveling plots and watching trailers for this particular magical world.
