What would the world do without Samantha Bee? The Full Frontal host took on NBC in her opening segment last night, attacking The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live for their soft treatments of Trump. As Bee put it, “Why do so many Americans think playing footsie with fringe hate groups isn’t a disqualifier from polite society, much less the presidency? Maybe because that’s the message they get from entertainment giants like NBC.”
Bee continued by pointing out that NBC did sever ties with Trump after his comments about Mexicans on the day he announced his campaign, but that those ties don’t seem to be as severed as they initially appeared. Trump has shown up on both The Tonight Show and as the host of SNL, both of which seem an awful lot like ties to the network.
The host was especially harsh on The Tonight Show, which stirred up controversy last week after host Jimmy Fallon chose to go easy on the presidential candidate. “Aww, Trump can be a total sweetheart with someone who has no reason to be terrified of him,” Bee joked. “I notice there were no cutaway shots to The Roots. I wonder why.”
Bee points out that network hosts and executives have little reason to fear Trump—he’s not threatening them. It’s women and people of color who have the most to lose under a Trump presidency, and Bee was quick to point that out.
Meanwhile, Fallon recently spoke to TMZ about the controversy surrounding the interview. “Have you seen my show?” the host joked. “I’m never too hard on anyone.” Fallon then pointed to his interview with Hillary Clinton, which aired last night, saying that he was just as easy on her as he was on Trump. Whether that soothes Bee, or any of the other people who were upset by Fallon’s interview, remains to be seen. Check out the Full Frontal clip above and watch Fallon’s interview with Clinton below.
