The success of the Champions League may one day push the biggest clubs in Europe to breakaway and form their own ‘Super League’ so they can have all the money to themselves, but for the time being the competition remains a heady mix of powerhouses, upstarts, and the occasional surprise package.
Matchday 2 of the 2016-17 Champions League group stage didn’t deliver any major upsets, but it was certainly entertaining. Atleti did that thing again against Bayern, Barcelona overcome a game Gladbach side, Arsenal did Arsenal things (they’re sure to disappoint later), Spurs pulled out a needed win, City and Celtic lit up Celtic Park, and the cup holders, Real Madrid, found themselves the latest witness of Thomas Tuchel’s youth revolution at Borussia Dortmund.
Of course people tweeted about it, and of course we hand-curated a selection of the 20 best tweets. Just like Arsenal coming up short in the quarterfinals, or people blaming Bayern’s struggles on Pep Guardiola, it’s just what we do.
