Ghost in the Shell has been the subject of so much controversy, it’s easy to forget that no footage from the film has yet been released. That has all changed with the release of five cryptic teasers which only give the briefest of glimpses into the Scarlett Johansson-starring DreamWorks and Paramount production.
Based on an incredibly popular manga series, Ghost in the Shell is centered on an elite anti-cybercrime unit. The vignettes that have been released focus on Johansson’s Major, a cyborg special-ops agent. The clips follow her as she disconnects from her wiring and gets to work.
Johansson’s casting in the role was the subject of controversy, largely because she is not Japanese, as many believe the original manga character to be. Major’s name in the manga and anime is Motoko Kusanagi.
The film is set to be directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) and will also star Michael Pitt, Juliette Binoche, Kaori Momoi and Rila Fukushima. Although producers insist the film is incredibly respectful to the manga upon which it’s based, we’ll have to wait until the film opens on March 31, 2017 to see. Until then, check out the first teaser above, and the other four below.
