There are fake songs, and then there are real songs, according to Brooklyn-based rock group The YeahTones. If a song is an opportunity to share information and ideas, then it can be used to spread either truth or lies: “Maybe I’ll try to write a real song,” shouts vocalist/guitarist Jake Pinto in the band’s new single, “Telling you everything that is wrong.”

The YeahTones try to do just that in “A Real Song,” beginning by calling out police in the first verse: “What if it wasn’t just so easy / To take a life while wearing blue.” A press release describes the single as “a brutal attack on mainstream media, pundits, police and politicians in the USA.”

It’s a catchy, pounding track with heavy guitar riffs and a punk attitude. In the video, band members roam city streets and morph into aloof newscasters, all while wearing matching shirts. Filmmaker Gerardo Rodriguez drew inspiration from his experience as a Mexican immigrant in an increasingly xenophobic country to develop the right “anti-establishment spirit” for the video.

The YeahTones’ debut album will be out Oct. 17, and they’ll go on tour in a little over a week. Check out the dates below, and watch “A Real Song” above.
