Jesse Lacey and company had a nice surprise for concertgoers at this past Thursday’s Brand New show: a Julien Baker cover.

Early in the set, after playing “Okay I Believe You, But My Tommy Gun Don’t,” Lacey went into the eponymous song from Baker’s debut album, Sprained Ankle. Audience members seemed to have thought they were witnessing new material; in the video above, someone can be heard saying, “I’ve never heard this before!” (If it’s true, they’re missing out.)

Lacey captures the emotional range of Baker’s tune but adds his own style, making it a little darker than the original (if that’s even possible). Hear it for yourself above.
