An Elvis Presley Documentary is Coming to HBO

This month Sony Pictures Television finishes production on a new Elvis Presley documentary that HBO will soon premiere.

The network’s Kary Antholis explained to Deadline that the concept for the project was to make “a film drawing upon very rare footage that captures Elvis’ musicianship in a new and exciting way.” With permission from his family’s estate, the movie will feature never-before-seen material from the Graceland archives. It’ll also include new photos and video from private collections around the world, as well as interviews with producers, session players, engineers, directors and others associated with Elvis.

The project will be in two parts and encompass Elvis’ whole life, from his childhood to his final 1976 recordings in Graceland’s famous Jungle Room den. It’s directed by Thom Zimny, the man behind the acclaimed Bruce Springsteen documentaries, and written by music journalist Alan Light, the previous editor-in-chief of both Vibe and Spin.

We don’t have a title or release date for the documentary, but be on the lookout, as it’s shaping up to be an excellent tribute.
