Watch Jessica Chastain Take on the Nazis in Gripping First Trailer for The Zookeeper’s Wife

World War II will never cease to produce amazing stories, and The Zookeeper’s Wife has the look of yet another among that number. As the first trailer suggests, the film, based on the nonfiction book of the same name by Diane Ackerman, stars Jessica Chastain and Johan Heldenbergh as Antonina Zabinski and Jan Zabinka, respectively, a married couple who run a zoo as Poland is invaded by Germany in 1939.

As the invasion occurs, the pair begin working with the Resistance to shelter Jews who have escaped from the Warsaw Ghetto. Based on a true story, The Zookeeper’s Wife also stars Daniel Brühl as the Nazis’ chief zoologist, who serves as the film’s primary antagonist. (Brühl, who burst onto the scene in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, has played a Nazi before, with scintillating results.)

The film’s trailer gives us a sense of the drama that will unfold over the course of the film, and also gives us a look at some of the animals inside the Zabinski zoo. The Zookeeper’s Wife is directed by Niki Caro, and has a somewhat puzzling March 31 release date—given the film’s prestige, it could probably make an awards play. March may be better for the film financially, though, especially considering how crowded the end of this year has already become.
