Christian Lee Hutson’s music is sad without being sympathetic. At least that’s what Mike Harris, the director for his new music video, “I Just Can’t Fucking Do It Anymore,” says. And he’s right.
The 26 year-old singer-songwriter is reminiscent of others ascribed the title, fusing elements of the likes of Bob Dylan and Joseph Arthur to create his own unique style. At first, Hutson might sound like something you’ve heard but then you realize he’s doing his own thing.
His new monochromatic video follows the would-be “Older Chris,” an introspective older man (played by Brad Wilson) who occasionally strums on a guitar and mouths the lyrics. It may sound melancholic but Hutson says it’s more ironic than anything. He tells Paste he wrote the song while waiting on the side of the road for a mechanic after hitting a deer.
What may sound like a song of despair is actually “quite hopeful,” Hutson says. Most importantly, the musician tells us that he “hopes that the humor is not lost.” His ability to find the beauty in the struggle is what makes Hutson’s music more nuanced than that of most singer-songwriters.
As for Hutson’s video itself, Harris eloquently says that it is “about how try as we may, we are haunted by our experiences, the things we did and did not do. They follow us through our lives like ghosts. The best we can hope to do is be a good ghost for someone else.”
“I Just Can’t Fucking Do It Anymore” is from Hutson’s forthcoming third full-length album. You can currently catch Hutson on tour—find his dates below, beneath video from his recent Paste Studio session.
