It’s not quite right to call Isabelle Huppert “the French Meryl Streep”—it’s more like the other way around. While Streep is a little older, Huppert, 63, got the earlier start. But like Streep, Huppert began her acting career with a bang and has only gotten better. She’s deftly chosen projects worthy of her talent, making her a perennial favorite at awards time. Huppert has 15 César Award nominations and one win, for 1995’s La Cérémonie, and she’s expected to up one or both numbers in February as a result of two stellar performances in 2016, as a rape victim bent on revenge in Elle, and as a newly single woman in Things to Come.
