Football goes on, even after terrible tragedy. Tributes to the 71 lives lost when the plane carrying Brazilian club Chapecoense crashed in Colombia have been held at matches played across the world and will continue into the weekend. More than 45,000 fans showed up for what would’ve been the Copa Sudamericana Final against Atlético Nacional, who have also announced they intend to forfeit the second leg of the tie.
Memorials throughout South America and around the world have been channeling the football community’s collective grief. In Chile, the crash victims were honored ahead of kickoff in the Chilean Clásico between Colo-Colo and Universidad de Chile. The centerpiece of the tribute was a stunning rendition of “Ave Maria” by world-renowned tenor Tito Beltrán, seen in the video above. After the performance, fans released green balloons into the air.
