The legendary Patti Smith took to the stage Monday night to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Democracy Now! Smith performed two songs at the celebration, alongside bandmate Tony Shanahan and her daughter, Jesse Smith.
Smith opened with “Peaceable Kingdom,” which she dedicated to the artists who were killed in Friday’s Oakland warehouse fire, as well as the journalists and activists who have lost their lives. Smith originally wrote the song for Rachel Corrie, the 23 year-old activist killed while protesting in Gaza. She finished her set with “People Have the Power,” for which she was joined by R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe.
Smith’s set was recorded and you can watch it above. Find 1979 Paste Cloud video of the Patti Smith Group performing “Because the Night” (and others) below.
