When Chairlift announced to the world that they would be calling it quits following a short run of farewell shows this Spring, they made sure to let fans know this wouldn’t be the end for either of the band’s members. “Patrick will be going on to produce records full-time, and Caroline to make music as a solo artist,” they said at the time. Now we have the first taste of what their post-Chairlift work will include with the release of an instrumental album from frontwoman Caroline Polachek.
The album, titled Drawing The Target Around The Arrow, was released under her initials, CEP, for free with no fanfare and shared via The Creative Independent, where she also discusses the record, her past and future work, being a female producer and singer, and more.
About deciding to keep vocals off the album she notes:
Naturally I did want to experiment with putting vocals on it because that’s sort of what I do. I tried half the record with vocals on it. I actually recorded it and I realized the whole thing falls apart once you put vocals on it. It becomes distracting. For me, it takes the pleasure out of it because I’m suddenly hearing myself. It loses its conceptual purity.
And Polachek gives a hint towards another solo record in the works, saying, “I’m also knee-deep into the next record that I’m working on, which is a vocal record. In a way, this record feels like an intermission, like a bit of a silence between these two other periods.”

Polachek has also noted that she’ll be performing material from the album with a 12-piece choir at two shows at Brooklyn’s National Sawdust, though dates have yet to be announced.
