Famed new-wave band Modern English are gearing up for the release of their new album Take Me To The Trees, which was fan-funded through a PledgeMusic campaign and which will mark the first release from the original lineup since 1986’s Stop Start. After coming back together in 2010 after not seeing each other in nearly 20 years, the band set off on tour and immediately felt their chemistry fall right back into place.
Today, Paste is excited to share the video for the album’s first single, “Sweet Revenge.” If the song sounds like a return to the new wave and post-punk roots of the band that promised to stop the world on their 1982 mega-hit “I Melt With You,” that’s no mistake. Take Me To The Trees was co-produced by the band and Martyn Young, a member of ‘80s electronic group Colourbox, in an attempt to recapture a sound that has all of a sudden come back into fashion. As for the video, directed by Gary Mortensen-Barker, it features clips of the band pantomiming playing along to the song, interspersed with other footage. Frontman Robbie Grey says that the band “wanted to make it a little like Warhol’s The Factory—all raw, exciting and colorful,” and that definitely comes through.
As for the inspiration behind the song itself, Grey explains:
“Sweet Revenge” is a song of modern desperation and lost love. It’s a return for Modern English to our early angular guitar work and in your face lyrics. The bass moves and won’t be pinned down as it weaves .The space age keyboards fly around like stars. I’m looking for Sweet Revenge. The cry of someone looking to blame the world.
Take Me To The Trees will be released Feb. 24 via Kartel Music Group. Modern English will also be embarking on a North American tour to celebrate the album’s release, starting off with their first-ever performance at SXSW this March.
