“In America, I was free only in battle. Never free to rest.” Samuel L. Jackson recites the words of African-American writer James Baldwin in the powerfully gripping trailer for I Am Not Your Negro, a documentary from Amazon Studios and Magnolia Pictures.

It’s no secret that America has an irrevocably sordid past with the treatment of any individual that isn’t white. In fact, we’ve been pretty terrible to everyone that is any shade darker than our Founding Fathers. Directed by Raoul Peck and read by Jackson, this film chronicles the writings of Baldwin to tell a story from the book he never finished on race in America, titled Remember This House. The book details his relationships with and the subsequent assassinations of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr.

The trailer showcases footage and pictures from the 1950s to now, visualizing the horror and tragedy that many have lived through and died from to lead a normal life in this country. With Jackson’s striking narration, this film is sure to leave a powerful impression on audiences.

I Am Not Your Negro releases Feb. 3 in theaters. Watch the trailer above.
