Chris Cooper played the lead as a Texas sheriff in 1996’s Lone Star, but the vast majority of his work is supporting roles. That’s no reflection of his vast skill set, however. A Midwesterner who took theater classes in college to combat shyness and then caught the bug, Cooper truly made his mark in 1999’s American Beauty, as the conflicted, homophobic Col. Frank Fitts. Four years later he won both a Golden Globe and the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor as John Laroche, “the orchid thief” in Spike Jonze’s Adaptation. Cooper currently appears in Ben Affleck’s crime drama Live by Night.
