The past week or so has been kind to The xx. On Friday, the dream-pop trio finally released their third LP, I See You, a wonderful and achingly beautiful change-up record.
And then last night on The Tonight Show, the group gave their first performance in support of the record with absolutely lovely renditions of the minor-key island groove “Lips” and the subtly insistent “Say Something Loving.” With a group that still greatly depends on atmospherics and ambience, it can be difficult for the band’s sound to translate to a live setting, but it works here. Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim’s voices lose none of their potency on the hermetically sealed 30 Rock stage, and Jamie xx’s beatwork has plenty of room to breathe. If they’re going to sound like this everywhere they tour this year, The xx will be a must-see act all year long.
