drummer Eric Slick has said his debut solo record Palisades was brought into being by several things: “Meditation, death, self-help, dream therapy, tarot and mysticism.” On lead single “You Became the Light,” you can certainly hear the meditative track winding its way through.
And this is not some idealized meditation where someone just sort of drifts off. Slick’s vocals do have a tinge of sleepiness to them but he’s also hyper-focused, a critical component of many meditative forms. Every inhalation and exhalation is being paid attention. Heartbeats are being monitored. In this case, Slick knows each drum beat and expulsion of guitar static. He’s sanded the chorus down to the koan-like, “You became the light.”
Slick says, “I attempted some form of contemplative practice to achieve stillness. I finally got there, but then realized there was a lifetime of work ahead of me.” And that’s “You Became the Light” in another koan-like encasement. The calm is found, even though the storm is on its way.
Slick’s album Palisades drops April 21 through Egghunt Records. He’s got upcoming solo tour dates that you can find below, along with “You Became the Light” and a recent Paste Studio performance that includes an acoustic rendition of the track.
