Back in 2009, musicians longtime friends Orenda Fink (of Azure Ray) and Scalpelist, aka Cedric LeMoyne (of Remy Zero), came together for a collaborative album under the name “O+S.” The album merged various styles they had grown to love over their musical careers, including “shoegaze, field recordings, and David Lynch soundtracks.” The musicians went on to pursue other endeavors and it appeared that O+S had just been a one-off.
After eight long years, though, the pair are coming back, and we here at Paste are excited to be sharing the first taste of what they have in store. “Hold You Down” is the mellow but catchy first single off O+S’ forthcoming sophomore record You Were Once the Sun, Now You’re the Moon, featuring a simple, hypnotic guitar and drum combo while Fink’s vocals sing softly on top. It’s a song that feels relaxing while giving you just enough energy to keep going; evoking the late-night trip home after a long night out.
About the song, Fink says:
“Hold You Down” is about the impossible task of accepting you are going to lose someone before you actually do. It wonders if love is the thread that weaves our collective fabric- and supposes that once you love someone they are a part of you forever, regardless of if they still inhabit their physical body or not.
You Were Once the Sun, Now You’re the Moon is due out this spring via Saddle Creek Records. Listen to “Hold You Down” below and check out Fink’s Paste session from SXSW in 2015 further down.
