The Walkmen’s Walter Martin has released the first song off his forthcoming album My Kinda Music. Titled “Hey Matt,” the song features The National’s Matt Berninger giving Martin a singing lesson, and Martin sings about getting rejected by Randy Newman—a true story. Apparently, Berninger wasn’t Martin’s first choice for a singing coach/collaborator: Martin asked Newman, but never received a response. Berninger’s response to the rejection? “That would’ve been awesome.” We agree, but we’re also glad for Berninger’s part in the song. Their vocals jive together in an adorable, teacher-student kind of way. Listen to the charming, quirky song-story below.
My Kinda Music is out May 5. Other features on the album include Laura Gibson, Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes) and Gabe Wax (Beirut). Martin’s previous album We’re All Young Together surprised fans with its sweet and playful tunes for children, won a Parent’s Choice Award and was used in multiple television ads. In My Kinda Music, Martin says he hopes to evoke the same warmth and humor of Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegon Days.
