know Roky Erickson and his exhaustive body of work well. In 2010, the indie-rock group partnered with the psych-rock pioneer for his devastating comeback album True Love Cast Out All Evil. And then in 2011, the two Austin, Texas, acts toured together, with Okkervil River often acting as a sort-of backup group.
For Amazon Music’s forthcoming “Love Me Not” “Valentine’s Day playlist, the band is flexing its knowledge of Erickson’s work like never before. Will Sheff and company took a whack at Erickson’s moving 1995 tune “You Don’t Love Me Yet,” an unheralded gem every bit as sterling as “”Nothing in Return or “”Starry Eyes. With a lithe acoustic shuffle and pattering percussion, Sheff imbues the tune with a yearning and wistfulness hinted at in the Erickson tune but not fully delivered. It’s a total earworm and a heartbreaker, and absolutely ideal for a sadsack Valentine’s Day playlist.
You can hear “You Don’t Love Me Yet” below (plus Paste Cloud audio from Okkervil River’s 2007 Daytrotter session), and find the rest of the “Love Me Not” playlist through Amazon Music here, plus their cheerier “Love Me” playlist here.
