Listen to Hurray for the Riff Raff's Plodding New Single "Pa'lante"

Hurray for the Riff Raff’s new single “Pa’lante” is about loss and rediscovery. At the song’s beginning, singer Alynda Segarra catalogs the conflict she feels between the imperative to “be something” and her lived experience. She articulates the pressure she feels thusly: “Colonized and hypnotized … sterilized, dehumanized … take your pick and stay out the way, be something!”

From these existential doubts, however, the track skips to Piedro Peti’s 1973 “Puerto Rican Obituary.” The second part of the track celebrates, rather than questions Segarra’s Puerto Rican heritage. Segarra replaces the imperative to “be something” with the Puerto Rican slang “Pa’lante,” roughly translating to “step forward.” She calls all Puerto Ricans from “El Barrio to Arecibo … from Marble Hill to the Ghost of Emmet Till” to “Pa’lante.” The song, by its end, is a triumphant celebration of a heritage that has been questioned and attacked.

“Pa’lante” is the second-to-last track from Hurray for the Riff Raff’s forthcoming album The Navigator, which promises to deal extensively with Segarra’s crises retaining her Puerto Rican heritage in America. Below, listen to the single, watch a HFTRR performance from the Paste Cloud, find The Navigator’s tracklist and beneath all that, find the band’s upcoming tour dates.
